The world is flooded by small drones. They do not have to be used as weapons, as the State has developed, it is enough that there are they are crashing uncontrolled. This will increase with the spread of drones. It is still unclear what kind of danger this is caused by changed into already important for approximately densely populated areas in cities.

Scientists from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State Tuition (Virginia Tech) have tried to estimate the peril of humans by falling drones. As they write in their contribution to the Annals of Biomedical Engineering, they were allowed to shoot or crash at full speed on dolls serving as crash test dummies, similar to safety tests at vehicles. It was investigated which can lead to throat and head injuries.

Surprisingly, drones are the heavier and bigger they are, the more dangerous. The smallest tested drones with 1.2 kg represent only a small, if not too trivial, risk, but the larger ones weighing up to eleven kg are quite dangerous, because of their mass. If, in addition, Amazon and Co. use drones to deliver goods, it might become quite uncomfortable for those who are unprotected without helmet and so forth. Move in the public space.



The scientists tested the drones by flying them onto the dolls or dropping them from a height of 5.5 m. Even if drones of the type DJI Phantom three encountered faces, the risk of dangerous injuries with 10 per cent was relatively low. The risk increases to 70 per cent with larger drones. With larger drones, however, no crash tests could be performed, which was also a consequence of the problem of meeting the head of the doll at all. It is seen as risky that a wing hits the head first and then hits the shoulder, but above all it is reversed.

According to the study, half of the crash is health-endangering. The scientists cautioned that the weight should be included in the safety precautions. The harder a drone is, the more serious is the risk. Risk is reduced if the drone breaks quickly during the impact,  the wings break away. Reducing the energy generated to the head by an impact of a drone can reduce the risk of serious injuries.
